5,000 Fingerlings released to Fish Conservation Zone in Sa Ang Village

This July, the outreach unit of Hin Nam No National Protected Area (HNN NPA) supported the traditional celebration on fish release day at Sa Ang Village, Bualapha District in Khammouane Province. Lao PDR’s National Aquatic and Wildlife Day is usually celebrated on July 13 each year. As part of this annual celebration, people across the country release fingerling fishes into lakes, ponds, and rivers to draw attention to the conservation and protection of diverse terrestrial and aquatic wildlife.

Raising Environmental Awareness for young students

Drawing competition “Nature and Biodiversity Conservation”

Capturing and understanding the environment through art is a fun way for young students to reflect about their natural surroundings, habitats and landscapes. To capture the beauty and diversity of the Hin Nam No National Protected Area (HNN NPA) through the eyes of local kids was the aim of recent activities of the HNN NPA outreach unit. Hence, a drawing competition for students of two schools in Boualapha district, Khammouane province was conducted on 26 and 27 May.

How a school garden can contribute to nature conservation

Environmental education with school students of Nong Ping village, Bualapha District

On 10th of May the Outreach Unit of Hin Nam No National Protected Area (HNN NPA) visited Nong Ping village in Boualapha District in order to follow-up on its school garden project. The garden was set-up earlier this year and after the first three months, the team of government volunteers and GIZ advisors was more than curious to get to know the results and experiences so far. For the experts on environmental education it was not only interesting to see if and how the vegetables grow. They were even more eager to inquire about the student’s experiences with the small project and their understanding about the linkage between school garden and nature conservation.

Participatory Zonation and Boundary Delineation in Hin Nam No.

Early this month, villagers and a team of experts and government staff made further steps to complete the participatory zonation and provisional boundary delineation of the Hin Nam No National Protected Area (NPA). During this zoning process, villagers and government staff jointly discussed existing data and maps and the villagers decided to partition the park into 87% (76.082 ha) Total Protected Zones (TPZ) and 13% (11.871 ha) Controlled Used Zones (CUZ).

Capacity development and co-management lead to more effective management of Hin Nam No
